Umm Al Quwain: Brother Gas emerged as champions of the Umm Al Quwain (UAQ) Ramadan Cup, stopping Iconic Cricket Club by five wickets.

The tournament which began during Ramadan could be completed only last week as the organisers had been staging their matches on a single ground — unlike in the past where matches used to be held in 15 grounds simultaneously.

Last month, Iconic Club had won the UAQ weekend night cricket but crashed to Brother Gas’s Azhar Mohammad, who took five wickets for just 11 runs. Iconic could muster only 162 runs in the 20 overs but they fought hard. Brother Gas reached the target with one ball to spare.

Iconic paid the price for their poor start after winning the toss. Four wickets fell in quick succession but Joseph James fought hard with 31 runs from 21 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. Iconic would have been out for a lower score but for Fahad Tariq’s eight-ball 18 and Fawad Gafoor’s quick 43 from 28 with four boundaries and two sixes.

Irfan Arif (27) and Farhan Baber (20) hit valuable runs before their team were all out for 162. Azhar took five wickets from his four overs giving away only 11 runs.

Chasing the target, Brothers Gas too got off to a poor start but Faheem Shafique and Abid Jutt hit 39 runs each. Faheem hit three boundaries and two sixes from 29 balls while Abid hit five boundaries and two sixes from 24 balls.

Tanvir Ahmed remained unbeaten with 31 runs from 23 balls with a boundary and two sixes while Azhar Mohammad chipped in with 26 off 20 balls to take Brother Gas to the target.
