Dubai: The UAE were in third place behind hosts Qatar and Oman with three days remaining at the Second GCC Beach Games in Doha.

After Monday’s action, the UAE had won four medals, Oman seven and the hosts eight, including three golds and two silvers.

Team Qatar won their third gold of the competition when they beat Bahrain in the handball final. Oman claimed the silver medal and Bahrain settled for bronze before a capacity crowd.

Qatar also clinched gold in the volleyball competition with a 2-0 win over Oman B, while Oman A took the bronze.

The UAE continued their strong showing in football with two wins in as many days to top the standings with six points. The UAE beat Kuwait and Qatar, while Oman occupied second place also with six points. The football competition will continue until Thursday.

The UAE’s Hamza Al Ali won silver behind Oman’s Khais Al Wahaibi in the laser 4.7 class sailing, while Qatar’s Abdul Rahman Ajinah claimed the bronze. In the optimist class, Oman’s Zakaria Al Wahaibi won the gold, leaving the UAE’s Abdullah Al Bishr in second and Oman’s Marwan Al Jabri third.

Meanwhile, the 3x3 basketball competition is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and conclude the following day, with Team Qatar considered the favourites for the title.
