Dubai: Salik, skippered by Juma Suhail Al Tayer, upstaged Thani Mohammad Al Rumaithi’s Sardal to claim the opening round of the Dubai Traditional 22ft Dhow Sailing Championship held at the Mina Seyahi maters off Dubai International Marine Club on Saturday.

Going neck-and-neck through much of the race, it was Al Tayer who tacked and moved ‘Salik’ away getting a strong gust of wind in the bargain to cross the line ahead of the experienced crew of Al Rumaithi at the ‘Sardal’ helm.

Mesha’al Mohammad Ahmad Mayouf’s ‘Tawaq’ with the UAE flag sail came in third leaving ‘Museer’ in fourth and ‘Rabadan’ in fifth position.

More than 80 22ft dhows participated in the first round of the competition that was organised by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) as part of its seasonal calendar. The second round of the championship will be held on November 10 followed by the third race on November 18.
