South Africa's Justin Onvlee and Sweden's Karin Alkstedt confirmed their status as two of the world's best young sailing talents with title victories in the Dubai Junior Regatta yesterday.

Holland captured the team trophy.

The firm favourite, reigning world junior champion Onvlee clinched his second consecutive Laser 4.7 title with another brilliant display on the final day of racing.

Onvlee completed a comprehensive overall victory from South African teammate Rudy McNeill and Holland's Giljs Pelt, who finished in the third position. The South Africans also captured the Laser team title.

Meanwhile, two disappointing finishes in the 10th and 12th places on the day denied the UAE's top competitor, Adel Khalid, of a podium finish in the Lasers.

The Swede's were dominant from start to finish in the Optimists, while Alkstedt came through to win from teammate Carl Strombeck and Denmark's Jes Lyhne Bonde.

However, it was the Dutch who came through to take the Dubai Trophy as the overall team winners, helped by Pelt's fine performance in the Lasers, where Bahrain finished a splendid third overall.

Celebrating at Dubai International Marine Club, Onvlee later said: "It was a great way to finish. I felt confident, but I knew that if I had a disqualification today I could lose the regatta and I was a bit worried about that. So I took it easy at the start and didn't push the line too hard."

Onvlee now plans to return to Dubai next year in different class as he moves towards his goal of sailing for an Olympic gold.

"I know they're planning to introduce match racing and South Africa want to enter a team. So I hope to be part of that," he said.

With light and shifting winds delaying the start of action on the final day and forcing the cancellation of one of the three scheduled races, Onvlee was quickly into his rhythm once the first Laser race began.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Emirates Group, the Dubai Junior Regatta was organised by Dubai International Marine Club in conjunction with the UAE Marine Sports Federation and the ISAF.

The event was co-sponsored by Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina, Trek, Rudy Project, Al Boom Marine, Dubai's Victory Team Duboats, Speedboat Dubai LLC and El Mundo.
