Dubai: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance has ratified the date for the 28th running of ‘Al Gaffal’ 60ft dhow sailing race.

As per organisers Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), the race will be held on May 12 and will account as the final heat for the UAE 60ft Dhow Sailing Championships. The event will also mark the official closing of the watersports season.

The organisers are expecting more than 100 dhows to confirm their participation. The dhows depart from the Sir Bu Nair Island that is situated more than 50 Nautical Miles from mainland Dubai. The finish line is normally off The Palm Jumeirah.

Shaikh Hamdan met the board of directors led by DIMC Chairman Ahmad Saeed Bin Meshar, Ali Nasser Bin Habala, vice-chairman and board of members, Huraiz Al Mur Bin Huraiz and Mohammad Hareb and gave his assent for the new race date.
