Valencia, Spain: Bigger, faster yachts will contest the next America's Cup, although when and where the 33rd edition of sailing's premier event will be held has yet to be decided.

Swiss syndicate Alinghi, who as Cup holders decide how to run their defence, said yesterday that the next edition would be in Europe between 2009 and 2011, depending on the venue.

The new class will measure 90 feet (27.4 metres), longer than the 24-metre America's Cup Class boats, and will have a deeper keel to keep the yacht upright when the wind is powering into her huge sails.

Alinghi skipper Brad Butterworth, who has won the last four Cups, said the new class would be more interesting for sailors who have raced ACC yachts for years, and would revive the design battle that has always been part of the 156-year-old event.

"These boats will be bigger, faster and harder to sail.

"There will be no electronic or hydraulic winches so the guys will have to be athletic," he said, adding the new boats would need a crew of up to 21 people rather than the current 17.
