Dubai: The fifth and sixth heat of the traditional dhow sailing in the 22-feet category race was marked by a spectacular display of skill and tactic.

In the two races held yesterday, right from the start Heyaf, skippered by Rashid Mohammad Al Rumaithi, took the lead and sailed gloriously on the serene waters of the Arabian Sea from inside the Palm Island to finish at the DIMC (DIMC) breakwater.

The course is set by Saeed Hareb, managing director, DIMC, the organisers of a season full of exhilarating watersports.

Rejam, led by Khalid Tarish Al Qubaisi, followed in second place with Al Adeed in third. The expertise and skill of Heyaf saw them cruising alongside the shore and with the wind in their favour made it to the top. Several other dhows taking a cue from them followed suit.

In the second race, however, Heyaf was not so lucky as Al Adeed made a great start and cruised ahead of the rest to take the first position at the podium. Heyaf was close behind followed by Dahees.

Shamardal 1, skippered by veteran Sultan Saeed Hareb, made it to the fourth position despite a technical snag near the Khayour turn buoy.

In the overall, Al Adeed has garnered 70 points over the 6 heats, 5 of which were held in Dubai and one in Fujairah. Gazi, who had two firsts this season, followed in second place.

Heyaf has only one win and stands in third place. Azzam who stole the honours in the first race of the season is placed fourth followed by Rejam who has been winless this year.

In the second race, two boats capsized and the rescue team was called in to get the sailors to safety.

The final heat of the series will be held on June 8 at Mina Seyahi.
