The UAE won a bronze medal in women's weightlifting competition yesterday in the ongoing 12th Arab Games as Yasmeen Abbas bagged a second medal in the sport which has been added to the Games for the first time.

Yasmeen's lack of experience prevented her from winning a silver as she competed with Egyptian Abir Khalil and Sudanese Mahasin Mohammad.

Abir registered 110kg in snatch and 136kg in clean & jerk for a total of 246kg to win the gold while Mahasin registered 70kg in the snatch and 80kg in clean & jerk for a total of 150.

Yasmeen registered 55kg in the snatch and 65kg in clean & jerk for a total of 111kg to win the bronze medal.

In shooting, the UAE ladies had a rare bad day when they failed to win a medal in the team or singles category of the Women's 50m Rifle 3 event as they scored 1,636 points to finish fourth behind Qatar who won the gold with 1,688 points, Bahrain won the silver medal with 1,673 points as Egypt was the bronze medalists with 1,661 points.

Shamsa Al Marzouqi scored the highest for the UAE with 560 points (192 prone, 181 standing and 187 dneeling). Afra Al Badi scored 551 points (191 prone, 180 standing and 180 kneeling) while Noura Al Rumaithi scored 525 points (186, 168 and 171). Only Shamsa was promoted to the top 8 to take part in the singles category in the final shootout which was won by Qatari Bahya Mansour who scored 673.8 points followed by her teammate Matara Al Ash'ari with 661.9 points while Kuwaiti Maryam Arzouqi won the bronze with 660.2 points.

Bahrain's Azza Al Qasimi finished fourth with 651.4 points and Al Marzouqi came fifth with 649.8 points. Al Badi finished 10th and Al Rumaithi 13th.

Fourth place

In golf, UAE team retreated to the fourth place, one day before the end of the competition which will come to a close today with the competitions of the fourth round. Qatar leads the teams with 689 points, the same tally as Egypt followed by Bahrain in third place with 690 points, one point less than the UAE in fourth place.

In the individual competition, Khalid Yousuf finished the third round in 3rd place with 77 (+5) and a total of 225 (+9) in round 3 while his teammate Ahmad Al Musherrakh was fourth with 79 (+7) in the third round and a total of 227 (+11). Fares Al Mazroui is at 20th place with 76 (+4) as the best performer of the UAE in the third round but his total for the three rounds was 240 (+24)while Abdullah Al Musherrakh was 24th with 81 (+9) and a total of 246 (+30).

Both Yousuf and Ahmad Al Musherrakh have a good chance of winning a medal if they push themselves in the last round today.
