Dubai: The UAE beat Bahrain in the 4th GCC Team Chess Championship which started off with four countries Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and hosts the UAE participating.

Each team has five players, four main players and one reserve player.

One Grandmaster, four International masters and five Fide masters are participating in this championship. Grandmaster Al Modiahki M, Hamad of Qatar is the top seed with an elo rating of 2559.

The UAE delegation is led by FM Salem A.R. Saleh rated 2476 and followed by IM Hassan Abdullah, FM Saeed, Ishaq, FM Alhuwar Jasem and FM Yahya Mohammad Saleh.

Salem A.R. Saleh won his game against Al Sulaity Ali of Bahrain in 47 moves from an unusual queen pawn opening. Salem went for an attack in the kingside and stopped the king from castling.

Salem exchanged the pawns in the kingside and opened up the way for his major pieces. In a king and pawn endgame, Salem was two pawns up and he converted his advantage into victory.

Prolonged match

Al Modiahki M Hamad defeated Al Awadi Waleed of Kuwait in a prolonged match lasting 50 moves.

In a French defence, Modiahki attacked the centre with his powerful knight and was exchange up early in the middle game. His active queen, open file for his rooks and good pawn structure gave him an overwhelming advantage.

In a minor piece endgame, Modiahki had a material advantage and marched his king towards the centre. Awadi resigned when he could not parry the threats against the king and the further loss of material.
