Al Ain: Team BR83, made up of Vitor Carvalho, Dave Shennan and Louis Holtzhausen, won the inaugural Red Bull Sultan of the Desert multi-discipline relay at Jabal Hafeet on Friday in a time of three hours, 45 minutes and 21 seconds.

Team Testosterone finished three minutes behind in second, and Team Oman came finished 15 minutes after the winners to claim third.

Teams of three took on a relay of 15km running, 15km mountain biking and 12.1km kayaking, while a handful of athletes decided to take on all three disciplines individually.

Carl Bailey won the overall men’s individual honour in a time of four hours, 16 minutes and 51 seconds, a mere ten seconds clear of Gustavo Netto. And Eva Clarke won the women’s individual category in a time of four hours, 59 minutes and six seconds.

Abu Dhabi-based Australian fitness instructor Clarke, who in February broke two world records for the most amount of knuckle push ups in one-hour (1,206) and 24 hour (9,241) time frames, said: “This was tougher than breaking records. I am happy with my result. The race was full of surprises and you didn’t really know what to expect in each stage.”

Lebanese runner Nader Jaber won the running leg in 57 minutes, 40 seconds, trailed closely by Holtzhausen in second and Netto in third. Oman’s Sulaiman Al Alawi, meanwhile, topped the mountain biking standings in one hour, 26 seconds, while Shennan won the kayaking section in a time of one hour, 31 minutes and 37 seconds.
