Abu Dhabi: Around 150 entries are expected for the newly introduced Shaikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Squash Championship - an event to promote the sport in the capital.
The event, being held under the patronage of Shaikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is jointly organised by Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort and AD Box Events.
Dr Mohammad Naeemat, Chairman of AD Box Events and the Organising Committee of the event, told a press conference here on Monday, "The main aim of this event is to get more people to play this sport. The event is being held from July 28 to August 17 and we hope that more numbers of UAE nationals take to this sport."
"Competitions will be held in the Open, Ladies, Mixed Doubles, UAE nationals, Youth, Veteran categories.
"This event sees a Mixed Doubles event being held here for the first time," Naeemat said.
"We also expect to see quite a number of UAE nationals taking part. Adel Sameer, one of the locally based squash players from Egypt has been training newcomers in squash for over three weeks now. We are confident that there is scope for more people in the capital to take to squash," added Naeemat.
"Sheraton Resort is proud to stage this event. It gives our members a great opportunity to get involved and for us to further our commitment to the local squash community," said Roxanne Campbell, Resort Manager at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi.
"We look forward to seeing some great matches and a different approach to squash by not only making it competitive but fun and enjoyable for everyone," she added.
