Dubai: The Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) bagged the top spot in the Arab Womens' Table Tennis Championships that concluded in Beirut, Lebanon, earlier this week.

Sponsored by the FAL Group of Companies, the SLC team overcame a gritty Tunisia 2-1, before securing identical 3-0 wins against Iraq and Palestine to keep a clean slate and bag the top honours.

The SLC team consisted of multiple medal winner Majd Bin Mohammad Al Baloushi, Noura Mahfouz, Shamma Al Ketbi, coach Hwan Lee and Nada Askar Al Naqbi, the general manager of the SLC Women Sports Department Nada Askar Al Naqbi and SLC table tennis supervisor Mariam Mohammad Al Mansouri.

Al Naqbi was pleased with the fine performance of the SLC squad in Beirut. She dedicated the victory to SLC Chairman Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Support

"None of this success would have been possible without the support of Shaikha Jawaher. We have made a great start with this competition, and we are confident we will do even better in future tournaments," Al Naqbi said.

The tournament was organised by the Lebanon Table Tennis Association at the Gziz Jounieh sports hall in the capital from October 22-28. The SLC team has come a long way since they bagged a fourth place on debut at the 2004 GCC Womens' Championships hosted by Bahrain.

A year later the SLC team made a haul at the 7th GCC Womens' Championships in Sharjah, in which Majd Mohammad Al Baloushi took the bronze.
