Dubai: The ninth annual Dubai Duty Free Gulf Gaelic Games will take place at The Sevens Stadium on March 28.

Almost 1000 players from nearly 70 teams are expected to take part in more than 110 games of hurling and gaelic football across six pitches in men’s, women’s, veterans and junior categories.

“The tournament is very important to the Irish community living in this region,” said Sean Staunton, president of the Dubai Celts and vice-president of operations for Dubai Duty Free. “It also opens its doors to welcome all our overseas guests to, what has become, a highly competitive, highly entertaining, action-packed weekend.

“This year’s tournament has succeeded in attracting numerous teams; we even have visiting teams from South Africa. The newly established Middle East County Board will also be heavily represented by four clubs in the UAE as well as Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.”

Dubai Celts chairman Seamus Begley said: “Last year’s tournament was a huge success. We expect 2014 to be bigger and better again with close to 70 teams participating this year.

“The Gulf Gaelic Games is one of the premier international event in the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) calendar. Travelling teams from Africa and the Middle East give it an added dimension this year. There is no doubt that every team will thoroughly enjoy the spectacle of the Dubai Duty Free Gulf Gaelic Games, the celebrations in the Irish Village and that’s before they see the rest of what Dubai has to offer.”
