London: British athletes arriving in Sochi this week to compete in the Winter Olympics will be accompanied by security personnel from Britain.

The Russian resort on the Black Sea is fortified by almost 40,000 soldiers, policemen and women and members of the feared Federal Security Services against the threat of a terrorist attack by militants from neighbouring Chechyna and Dagestan. But the British team have been afforded extra security on the advice of the Foreign Office.

It is believed that the American team will also travel with a “significant” security detail and have five aircraft on standby to evacuate their athletes in event of an attack on the Olympics.
