New Orleans: The New Orleans Saints and head coach Sean Payton have agreed terms on a multi-year contract extension, the NFL team said on Saturday.

“I am pleased that Sean Payton will be our head coach for a long time,” Saints owner Tom Benson said in confirming the deal, which was reported to be for five years.
“Now we can focus our attention on building on the winning tradition with the Saints that Sean has played such a large role in.”
Payton has not coached this season as he served a one-year suspension for his role in the so-called bounty scandal, in which the NFL said Saints players were rewarded monetarily for injurying opposing players.
His contract was due to expire after the current season ends on Sunday.
In his six seasons guiding the Saints, the team amassed a record of 62-34 with four playoff appearances and a Super Bowl triumph.
This season the Saints have been a disappointing 7-8 under interim coaches Joe Vitt and Aaron Kromer.
