Dubai: Red Bull have said the suspension of the popular Red Bull Air Race Championships was inevitable to consider the sport's future success and development.

A statement sent to Gulf News by Karolina Marczuk from the Red Bull press office in Austria said: "The organisation will use this opportunity to fast track the technological advancements currently in the making which would further improve the already high levels of safety".

Fans from across the globe have bemoaned the sudden suspension of the Red Bull Air Race for a year in 2011 which was announced in a brief statement published on the event's official website late on Thursday.

The statement also said there was a need to revise the main organisation and commercial areas to realise the full potential of the sport. This would include the development and reinforcement of strong host city partnerships to secure a long-term race calendar.

"At this stage it is too early to give any further comments on this matter," Marczuk said.

Despite the statement, it has been other issues that have in fact led to this suspension of the series — the first round of which was held in Abu Dhabi for the past six years now.

Safety during the air race and the honouring of contracts by host cities have been among the major issues.
