Dubai: A special adjudicating panel from the Guinness World Records is already in Dubai to ascertain whether the FAI World Parachuting Championships Mondial 2012 is worthy to be considered as an entry as the biggest parachuting event in the world.

“We are convinced that this is the biggest-ever gathering of parachute professionals and everyone is of the opinion that this fact ought to be remembered for a long, long time all over the world,” Yousuf Al Hammadi, Championships Director told Gulf News.

“On our part we are convinced that these world championships will be a world record and that is why we have invited the representatives from the Guinness World Records here this week,” he added.

The FAI World Parachuting Championships – Mondial 2012 Dubai has attracted a record of more than 1,600 participants from 57 countries who will be contesting in 13 different categories taking place at the Skydive Dubai on The Palm from November 28 to December 9.

“People in the parachuting world are already speaking about the record numbers that we have attracted here for this competition, compared to the 700-odd participants we had at the last championships in Switzerland. This is the novelty at the moment and everyone is so excited that we have been able to popularize our sport and take it to the next level within one year,” Al Hammadi disclosed.

“Seeing the enthusiasm and response we are convinced that we will get a favourable reply and Dubai will once again be in the Guinness World Records,” he added.

The official attributed this success due to the level of trust and confidence Dubai has created within the international parachuting community through the organization of top-level competitions here in the past. “During the last three years we have been organizing international competitions and the world governing body for the sport (FAI) has seen what we are capable of. They are aware that this dedicated venue in Dubai is simply the best for the sport and that is why we so easily bagged the right to stage this competition here this year,” he related.

“When they awarded Dubai the right to host this competition, the FAI was convinced that we are capable of doing much more as we are always trying to raise the bar. They have seen what we have done here in the past and most importantly, we have been able to build the trust and confidence with all participants,” Al Hammadi said.
