Dubai: Vincenzo Nibali, last year’s winner of the Giro d’Italia and 2010 Vuelta a Espana, may give in to a sweet distraction during the Dubai Tour 2014.
Nibali is leading the Astana Pro Team this week, but much of his thoughts will be on wife Rachele back home as the couple await the arrival of their first child in less than two weeks. “I’m concerned but I am also concentrated on what I am doing here,” Nibali told the media here on Tuesday.
“Hopefully everything will be okay with her [Rachele] and I can go back in time [for the delivery] after this race,” he added.
Born on November 14, 1984, on the same day as the famous cyclist Bernard Hinault, in Messina, Nibali moved from his hometown Messina to Tuscany at the age of 16. The cyclist moved to Lugano in 2012 with his girlfriend Rachele and the two married in October the same year.
“I know it is easy to lose focus, but then there is always a telephone around to keep in touch,” he quipped.
