The manager of Team USA is confident Team USA will continue its strong showing on the international scene after putting several measures in place to popularize the sport.
Morris, who hails from Hoboken, New Jersey, took over from Jeff Demmon as Team USA manager recently. Demmon resigned after managing the team for four years, and Steve Schultz, Chairman, NSCA Advisory Council’s Awards Committee, ratified Morris as the new manager.
The team manager serves as the liaison between Team USA members and the NSCA and is responsible for coordinating and managing the team for World Sporting and World FITASC events.
Morris is managing a team of nearly 40 shooters participating in the Nad Al Sheba Clays Championship that got under way along the Al Ruwayyah road on Sunday. The strong USA contingent includes several national champions including Gebben Miles, Michael Taylor, William Fennell, Anthony Matares and Diane Sorantino.
“Bringing kids into the sport is what we struggle with in America because of the cost factor involved in shooting. A case of shells cost $80 in the US. Then there is the cost of targets and the cost of the gun itself. It’s a very expensive sport,” she offered.
“But we have a lot of youth programmes for the kids to help offset that cost. In addition, a lot of our top shooters work with the children. We also have different promotions at the clubs where the top shooters come in to guide the young shooters at least three times in a week,” Morris added.
“Then there are a lot of internal age level tournaments so that the youngsters develop the competitive spirit. And all this is completely free for \kids in various age catgories. This is how we can get the next generation of shooters.”
