Khalid makes strong start in Rally de Espana

Title-chasing BP-Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team on Friday got up and running in Rally de Espana, round 12 of the 15-event FIA World Rally Championship series.

Salou: Title-chasing BP-Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team on Friday got up and running in Rally de Espana, round 12 of the 15-event FIA World Rally Championship series.

With two identical loops of three flowing asphalt speed tests in the Catalonia region of Tarragona facing the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority-backed BP-Ford outfit, the UAE's Shaikh Khalid Al Qasimi - the team's third driver, made a strong start. Al Qasimi finished 16th on the opening 20.48km La Mussara stage, 14th on the following 21.26km Querol run and crossed the 24.14km El Montmell stage finish line in 17th to enter the midday service in 16th place.

"I'm setting a good pace and I'm trying to drive in a committed fashion," said the 36-year-old.

BP-Ford Abu Dhabi's newly installed second driver, Francois Duval, made a dream start in his first event with the team.
