Abu Dhabi: The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation is conducting clinics in local schools to encourage students to take part in the World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup, to be held during the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship at the FGB Arena, Zayed Sports City, from April 15-19.

Twenty-one schools from Abu Dhabi, 28 from Al Ain and 13 from Al Gharbiya took part in clinics and competitions. The clinics featured demonstrations as well as the opportunity for participants to test their skills against coaches.

“Our students couldn’t contain their excitement as they got the chance to practice Jiu-Jitsu ahead of the championship,” said Al Ain School’s Jiu Jitsu coach Pedro Damasceno.

“For some of the children it was their first introduction to the sport, but after the demonstration and lessons the students were interested and wanted to practice the moves themselves. This is a great initiative to keep our students active and to teach them something new and exciting. I know more than a few have already asked to attend the championship in April.”

The school competition was held in February at Al Nahyania Hall and Fatima Bin Mubarak School. Winners of their respective divisions will compete in the National Championship 2014 that will be held in Al Gharbiya (Western region) on March 11 and 12.
