Abu Dhabi: Three strong teams will be vying for the Ghantoot Gold Cup polo championship which gets under way at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club fields tomorrow.

Hosts Ghantoot, Al Basti, and Emirates, boasting professional Emirati and high-goal Argentine players, will clash in three preliminary rounds starting tomorrow, with the final scheduled for February 27.

Each preliminary match will consist of four seven-minute chukkas, while the final will be extended to five chukkas.

The annual event is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club, presented by Al Basti and held in association with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Ghantoot skipper Nasser Al Shamsi, said: "We have three teams taking part, and that means we know each other very well and all want to win."

Salem Abdullah Al Shamsi, Managing Director at Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club, encouraged polo fans or those just curious about the sport not to miss the opportunity.

"It is free to get in and we encourage families to come along and see the matches. We want to show people the good standard of polo that we play at Ghantoot," he said.
