Dubai: The organising committee of Dubai Tour 2014 has stepped up its promotional campaign before playing host to the high-profile cycling event next month.

Accompanied by Dubai Tour Chairman Saeed Hareb, members of the organising committee took the trophy that will be handed to the winner on top of Burj Al Arab on Tuesday.

“This is an important part of our strategy in engaging the people of Dubai,” Hareb said after meeting up with tourists at reception area of the hotel on Tuesday. “We want everyone to be involved, be it the residents or the ones who are visiting Dubai. We want this to be the most talked about sporting event this year.”

With only one week before the inaugural Dubai Tour begins, the committee has been conducting an extensive marketing campaign to inform the public abaout the event.

The Dubai Tour is being hosted by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) from February 5 to 8 under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, DSC.

As one of the main partners, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has backed the promotional campaign by installing flags and banners along some of the main roads in Al Garhoud and Business Bay. In addition, another 20 passenger buses and taxis have been decorated with the Dubai Tour slogans in Arabic and English. The RTA has also displayed huge advertisements about the Tour at some of the main landmarks and tunnels.

Property developer Nakheel has also pitched in with a ‘Dubai Tour’ flag decorating the arch in the middle of The Palm Island along with a ‘Nakheel Welcomes Dubai Tour’ in Arabic and English.

The committee has also been conducting field visits to schools in the emirate in an attempt to get students to support the event. On Monday, the committee members visited the Al Maktoum and Al Shafei Schools in the Al Safa Park area, where students were briefed about the vital role the Dubai Tour would play in promoting the emirate.

Members of the committee also visited hotels that lie along the routes of the race so that tourists and visitors can join in cheering the cyclists when they pass.

The various working committees will convene more regularly and also conduct visits to several corporations and supporting entities to complete all organisational details well before the launch of the event.
