Dubai: The fifth Dubai International Open Bowling Championship will be held from October 1-14 at the Dubai International Bowling Centre in Almamzar.

Announcing the event to be held jointly by the UAE Bowling Association (UBA) and Dubai Sports Council (DSC), Dr Ahmad Al Sharief — Secretary General of DSC said at a press conference on Sunday: “We have been supporting the championship since its inception in 2010. It also gives us the pleasure to continue our support to hold such an event in spreading and developing the game.” The championship will be sponsored by the Commercial Bank of Dubai and AlMasaud Group of companies.

Mohammad Al Qubaisi, Chairman of UAE Bowling Association, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of DSC for patronising the championship.

“The DSC support during the last four years was one of the main reasons of the success and continuation of the event. We are happy to be sponsored by two outstanding national organisations, namely, CBD and Almasaud Group”.

The four-year history of the championship has seen local competitors winning it twice while the title has gone to overseas players other times. Finland’s Oskopalerma won the title in 2010 edition where 101 players competed while in 2011, UAE national Shakir Ali won the title with 151 players taking part.

Sweden’s Kempolipa won the third title in 2012 while Mahmud Ahmad Al Attar won it lastime. “The event has given the local bowlers a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the best,” Al Qubaisi said.

The championship will include three categories: Open (including UAE nationals and male and female residents), women and youth (under-21).
