Dubai: The Dubai festival ladies volleyball championships will be held at the Al Wasl club from January 28 to February 3, with teams from UAE, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Iran, Slovenia, India, China and Italy taking part.
The tournament's prize money will be Dh110,000. The winner gets Dh50,000, runner up Dh35,000 and third place Dh25,000.
This was announced by Shaikha Shamssa Bint Hashr Al Maktoum, UAE Volleyball Association (VA) board member and president of the championships organising committee in a press conference held on Saturday at the Dubai Police Officers club.
"The championships will be held under the patronage of Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Events Management Corporation, and will be organised by the Al Wasl club and the volleyball association under slogan: 'Together on the road to Innovation', with teams from Asia, Africa and Europe participating," said Shaikha Shamssa.
Saeed Al Kuthairi, VA deputy chairman, Nabeel Abdul Karim, board member of Al Wasl club and Arwa Ahmad the tournament's manager, were also present.
"We organise this tournament with an aim to create a better future for ladies' volleyball in the UAE according to the directive of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare [GAYSW], to hold tournaments and popularise the sport among women in the country," she said.
Shaikha Shamssa said the organising of ladies' tournaments need financial support. "We can organise several ladies tournaments every year and invite teams from different parts of the world.
"But the only problem facing us is financial support. For example, we are still waiting for the financial support from the GAYSW and Dubai Sports Council for the current tournament, even though we sent the budget to them some time ago."
The president of the organising committee urged national companies and corporations to support the tournament to contribute in developing ladies volleyball in the UAE.
Al Kuthairi said the association will extend support for ladies' volleyball. Abdul Karim said they will hold a training camp for the Al Wasl ladies' team in preparation for the tournament.
