The democratic process in the UAE sports associations continues today with the taekwondo and karate association elections scheduled to be held at the leaders' qualification centre in Dubai.

Abdul Aziz Ahmad Al Hajry will be elected unopposed as chairman of the associations' board of directors as he was the only candidate for the presidency.

Al Hajry began as a board member of the karate association in 1991 and was named general secretary in 2001. He will stay as chairman until 2008. Al Hajry was nominated by Sharjah club.

The battle will be tough between nine candidates for the board membership. From the nine, only six will be elected for the board of directors.

The nine candidates are Mohammad Salim Bin Ghulaitta (Al Nasr), Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Al No'man (Sharjah club), Saeed Obaid Al Tenaijy (Al Ittihad Kalba), Naser Sultan Al Memary (Al Ain club), Deaij Jasim Rayeesy (Ajman club), Ebrahim Mohammad Al Jenahy (Falaj Al Mualla club), Ayoub Mohammad Lashkary (Al Shaab club), Hasan Al Sayed Al Hashimy (Al Ahli], Mohammad Abbas Al Boloushy (Al Shabab club).

Meanwhile, the Chess general assembly held on Saturday night lasted only 15 minutes due to the president and board members being elected unopposed.

Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the Dubai Police Chief and the former president of the athletics association, said that if he was in the position of Ahmad Kamaly, the candidate for the athletics association presidency, he would have given his vote, without hesitation, to Major General Mohammad Hilal Al Kaaby, the leading candidate to win the top position.

Al Nasr Mohammad Abdul Karim Jalfar, the candidate for the volleyball association presidency, will hold a press conference today to reveal his plans to develop volleyball in UAE.

Four presidents in four associations won unopposed. They are Ebrahim Al Banai (chess), Esmail Al Gargwi (basketball), Abdul Aziz Al Hajry (taekwondo and karate), and Shaikh Faisal bin Humaid Al Qasimi (cycling).

While the presidents won unopposed, the battle will be tough for winning the boards' membership.
