Cash boost for water sports

New budget is being seen as an incentive for the DIMC to further promote water sports.

  • Water sports in the UAE have received a massive boost with His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordering a 100 per cent increase in its annual budget.

Dubai: Water sports in the UAE have received a massive boost with His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordering a 100 per cent increase in its annual budget.

Following the decree, which was announced yesterday by General Mussabah Rashid Al Fattan, Dir-ector of Shaikh Mohammad's Office, water sports will receive Dh90 million for the 2009 season.

Al Fattan said this major increase in the club's budget is an incentive for backing the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) and to enable it to fulfil its role in the local and international arenas.

He said it was also a gesture from Shaikh Mohammad to encourage the UAE youth, lovers of marine sports and professionals to develop this heritage sport which reflects the strong bond between UAE nationals and the sea.

He also said that the fin-ancial reward embodies Shaikh Mohammad's interest and concern for the UAE youth in all walks of life and his keenness to preserve the heritage, culture and identity of the UAE.

Al Fattan added that Shaikh Mohammad has instructed an increase in water sport races, competitions and activities, and that His Highness in addition ordered the allocation of Dh10 million for hosting international powerboat races to take place in the UAE next season.

He revealed that Shaikh Mohammad has also instructed the DIMC to conduct more competitions and events especially the annual Maktoum Sailing Trophy.

Sponsored by Emirates, the annual event has attracted a lot of interest from foreign boats, including entries from Australia, South Africa, France and Germany.
