Bowlers' splendid effort brings cheer to UAE

Bowling has supplied the UAE with the most medals in the Asian Games since the 12th Games in Hiroshima in 1994.

Doha: Bowling has supplied the UAE with the most medals in the Asian Games since the 12th Games in Hiroshima in 1994.

Out of the 14 medals the UAE has won so far in the Games, ten are from bowling.

The trend continued in Doha when bowler Naef Eqab clinched the UAE's fifth medal of the Games when he won the silver medal in the All Events late Friday night. Eqab scored 5,407 points, just 75 points less than Saudi Arabia's Badr Al Shaikh who the gold medal.

Eqab scored 1,245 in the singles, 1,446 in the doubles, 1,362 in the trios and 1,345 in the team for an average of 225.3 points.

Mahmoud Al Attar, who won a bronze medal in the singles, finished in 29th place with 5,106 points while Mohammad Al Qubaisi, one of the most experienced bowlers in the UAE, could only finish 30th with 5,105.

Jamal Ali, who won a silver in the doubles, was 39th with 5,036 points and two other UAE bowlers, Hussain Al Suwaidi finished in 44th place with 5,018 points and Ebrahim Al Hashimy in 61st place with 4,911 points.

Victory in chess

Eqab was delighted to win the silver. "I worked hard to win the second gold for the UAE, but luck was not with me," he said. "But Thank God for the silver. I hope we can do better in the Masters."

Meanwhile the UAE chess team scored its first win in the mixed teams Classical Swiss when they beat Sri Lanka 2-1. Noora Mohammad Saleh beat Yasoda Methmali, Grand Master Talib Mussa drew with Athula Russella and Abdullah Hasan drew with Chinthaka Galappaththi.

The UAE now have four points after three rounds.

India tops the standings with 7.5 points after they beat hosts Qatar 2-1.

In volleyball UAE lost 3-0 to India to make their exit. The match lasted 63 minutes and India won 25-12, 25-14 and 25-19. UAE finished with five points in Group A. They won only one match against Lebanon and lost three to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and India.

In cycling 1km time trial finals UAE's Badr Ali Shambih finished in the eighth place. He clocked 1.09.869 minutes.

UAE bodybuilder Ammar Al Khansoori missed a bronze medal by a narrow margin. Ammar was fourth in the 85kg pre-judging round with 44 points. The gold was won by Kamal Abdul Salam of Qatar while Hussain Fadel of Bahrain won the silver.

UAE's Salim Al Shamssi finished fifth in the 80kg finals with a score of 50 points. The gold was won by Sitthi Charoenrith of Thailand.
