Sharjah: More than 900 sportswomen from 15 countries will participate in the second Arab Women Sports Tournament that commenced in Sharjah on Monday.

Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and chairperson of Sharjah Ladies Club, inaugurated the tournament — the largest Arabic women sports event.

During her welcome speech at Sharjah Sports and Culture Club, Shaikha Jawaher said: “It is my pleasure today to welcome my daughters in the participating teams, as well as all guests and delegations present with us today. I would like to thank everybody for their participation in the tournament, and also thank those whose efforts made this tournament possible like the Olympic Committees, Unions, and sports authorities.”

The speech was followed by a ceremonial entrance of the participants and delegates representing each country, holding their national flags. Participating countries include the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Algeria, Sudan, Iraq, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Tunisia.

The tournament includes seven sports event, and will be held at 10 different venues in Sharjah.

The sports events are basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting and athletics.

Soon after the inauguration Sharjah Ladies Club and Al Muharraq Sports Club from Bahrain contested in a basketball match.
