Badminton tournament starts today

The India Social Centre's new premises, which has some of the best sporting facilities for a community club, will kick start its activities with the ISC-Al Masaood-Bridgestone UAE Open 'Invitation' Badminton tournament from today.

Abu Dhabi: The India Social Centre's new premises, which has some of the best sporting facilities for a community club, will kick start its activities with the ISC-Al Masaood-Bridgestone UAE Open 'Invitation' Badminton tournament from today.

Addressing a press conference, ISC president Sudhir Kumar Shetty said: "This is a team event, which is being held for the first time. Apart from this our ISC Open event, which is one of the longest running tournament, will also be held."

"This is the first of many sporting events that we plan to organise both for members as well as the top players from all nationalities in the UAE. We will be reviving the Mr ISC Bodybuilding contest, the Open Tennis and the ISC Open Snooker tournaments. Apart from this we will also be introducing events in chess, darts etc," said Shetty.

"The new India Social Centre building, spread over 90,000 sq ft, has a swimming pool and a modern gymnasium while the sporting facilities include badminton courts, squash courts, tennis courts, table tennis halls, snooker tables," Shetty said.

ISC sports secretary KM Santosh said five teams will be taking part in the event which will start today and will conclude on May 8. "Over 150 matches will be played and the invited players are among the best currently playing in the UAE," he said.

Al Masaood-Bridgestone general manager Manivannan said: "We are glad to be supporting this event. This centre has some of the best facilities."
