Doha: UAE shooter Saif Al Shamssi flattered to deceive at the Lusail shooting range yesterday. Looking all set for a bronze in the double-trap event, Al Shamssi finally logged in 184 points, a point less than the eventual third place finisher.

Al Shamssi scored 46 points in the first attempt, 45 in the second, 48 in the third and 45 in the fourth and final attempt.

The other UAE shooters: Mohammad Dahi scored 127 points to come in 16th place while Ahmad Dahi scored 126 points and finished in 17th place.

The UAE handball team , meanwhile, lost their second match when they were defeated by Japan 34-20.

Earlier on Monday night, the UAE players gave an excellent performance when they crushed Uzbekistan 46-27 at the Al Gharafa indoor sports hall.

The UAE players finished the first half leading 24-19 and they dominated the second session by scoring more goals to score a first win in group C. Mohammad Saqr, Abdullah Al Saffar, Abdul Razaq, Qazim Al Saffar and Nabeel Ashour were outstanding as they carved the victory for the UAE.

No hope

However, the defeat against Japan yesterday meant they have now lost all hope of reaching the quarterfinals after conceding two defeats.

In volleyball, UAE lost 3-0 to Kuwait and with that - the hope of reaching the quarterfinals.

Kuwait won 25-11, 25-23, and 25-19.

This was the second defeat for the UAE, who will play their last match more as a formality against India next Saturday. They had scored only one win against Lebanon in their first match in Group A.

In shooting, Shamma Al Muhairi and Shaikha Al Rumaithi fared miserably in the women's 25 metres pistol qualification rounds. Shamma finished 26th with 563 points while Shaikha came in 50th with 486 points.

The first place in the qualification round went to Chen Ying, who scored 587 points.
