Dubai: Al Jawarih defeated Furjan Champions Team 4-3 in the opening match of the football tournament of the Dubai Sports Council-backed 3rd Furjan inter-district sports, that got under way in a number of locations last weekend.
Ahmad Salem scored a brace while Ali Mohammad and Mustafa Khamis got one each for the winners. Furjan's goals came from Khalid Obaid (2) and Qasim Ghuloom. Nabil Salem, the Al Jawarih goalkeeper was selected as the best player. In another match, Al Safa Stars defeated Al Shabab 5-2 with Abdul Wahab Hussain, Salah Sulaiman, Ayoub Ali, Abdulla Ghulum and Jihad Salman scoring one each, while Jaber Hilal scored both for Al Shabab.
This year's football tournament has attracted a record 104 teams that have been divided into two separate competitions: Under-23s and Under-17s. Teams for the Under-23's competition have been divided into eight groups who will play in Deira and Bur Dubai with eight teams in each group.
The champion of each area will then qualify to the next stage to be played via the knock-out system. The basketball competition has attracted 16 teams with players of various ages.
