Action steps up in Ramadan event
Oman's Fatima Al Nabhani advanced in the women's tennis event while UAE national player Eisa Al Hindi lost his fixture in the snooker event as the action in the 12th Open Sports Festival at the Armed Forces Officers Club began to create more excitement.

Abu Dhabi: Oman's Fatima Al Nabhani advanced in the women's tennis event while UAE national player Eisa Al Hindi lost his fixture in the snooker event as the action in the 12th Open Sports Festival at the Armed Forces Officers Club began to create more excitement.
In the tennis event, sponsored by Etihad Airways, Al Nabhani lived up to her favourite status when she scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nicole Saleh.
Also advancing to the next round were Claudia Mansfeldova who beat Kim Saade 6-0, 6-2 while Magdalena Cicekova was tested before winning 6-4, 6-3, over Ebada Jasmine. Lima Sa'ad also advanced defeating Macleod Beauty in straight sets.
In the men's quarterfinals, Ali Ganem beat Wasel Watrai Jeham 6-1, 6-2 while Amir Ganem advanced after his opponent, Maus Seeji, withdrew from the event. In other matches Troy Gilham beat Jalil Khan 6-0, 6-3, while Hamad Al Janahi defeated Mohammad Medhat 7-5, 6-3, according to a press release from the organisers.
In snooker, which is one of the 14 disciplines in the Dh14 million games being held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, UAE national team player Eisa Al Hindi went down by two frames to three to Abdullah Ahmad Al Ali.
In other snooker matches, Ahmad Ha'em defeated Indian Darmesh Gandhi 3-2 while Bahraini national team player Ahmad Ghuloom and Egyptian Mohammad Hani defeated Feras Al Fardan and Al Sa'adi Surour Al Ka'abi respectively by identical 3-0 margins. Bashir Hussain (Pakistan) scored a 3-0 win over Sayyid Hussain Al Mutawwa while Fahd Al Hammoumi also defeated Sulaiman Al Aisani 3-0.
High scoring
In Friday's football action, Al Bateen scored a huge 13-2 win over Anabeeb while Abu Dhabi Airport thrashed Marchilago 10-1. Hydra Properties also trounced Express 12-0 to round-off the high-scoring matches of the evening.
In judo, the UAE national U-20 youth team put up a splendid performance to emerge the overall winners of the event, which was sponsored by the First Gulf Bank, with two gold medals. The Syrian national team placed second with a gold and a silver, while third place went to Kuwait with a silver and two bronze medals.
In the individual bouts, gold medals went to the UAE's Saeed Al Qubaisi (73kg) and Khalifa Al Qubaisi (81kg), Syria's Tariq Saeed (66kg), Kuwait's Abdullah Al Muragi (below 60 kg) in the men's category , while the gold medals in the women's category went to Syria's Safa Al Hasaan (63kg) and Maya Khalifa (70kg), while Tunisia's Hiba Badrudeen and Shaza Al Hassan clinched the gold medals for the 78kg and below 78kg respectively.
Lieutenant Colonel Salah Al Salloumi, Deputy Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee and Director of the championship, decorated the winners with their medals at the end of the event.
Mohammad Bin Tha'aloub Al Dar'e, Chairman of the UAE Wrestling and Judo Association and Honorary Chairman of the Arab Judo Federation, praised the organising committee for the high standard of the championship. He said the high technical and organisational standard of the championship, coupled with the big crowd would contribute to the preparation of the UAE national team for the world U-20 youth championship, scheduled for October this year.
In athletics Khalifa Hareb, won the 1,500 metre race, while Sayyid Ali Abbas emerged winner of the 800 metre race. Mohammad Rashid took the high jump gold while the 100-metre race for people with special needs went to Othman Yousuf Habib.
