Basketball sees two teams of five on-court players play for a regulation 40 minute match, with the team getting the ball through the net the most times being the winner.

Despite lasting 40 minutes – divided into four quarters of 10 minutes – a game will frequently run over. For each violation, foul or throw-in, the timer is stopped.

Shots are worth one, two or three points, depending on the player’s position.

A court’s dimension is 28 metres in length and 15 metres in width (420 metres square).

At the Rio Games, 24 teams will compete (12 men’s and 12 women’s). Each team is limited to 12 players, with five allowed on the court at any one time. Winning teams will progress to the final.

When: Saturday August 6 to Sunday August 21 Competition: Men’s tournament, women’s tournament
