Dubai: The 38th edition of the UAE Open badminton 2015 got under way on May 18 at the India Club premises. The tournament is expected to attract a record number of 650 participants who will compete for top honours across 26 categories such as Men’s, Ladies, Boys, Girls and Veterans.

All the matches will be played in the 21-point format with each player being able to participate in up to three events. A men’s doubles exhibition match was won by Dinesh Nair and Shibil C.P. who beat the team of Rohit Haridas and James Varghese.

Winners and runners-up of the men’s singles and men’s doubles will also play in the super league along with eight ranked players from India and Malaysia. Anup Sridhar, Moheet Kamat, Harshit Agarwal and Siddharth Thakur will be the Indian competitors while the Malaysian participants will be Mohammad Razlan Shah, Mohammad Hafiz Bin Hashem, Nur Izzudin Bin Mohammad Rumsani and Zairul Hafiz Bin Zainuddin.

As part of India Club’s corporate social responsibility initiative, matches are also being organised under separate categories for special needs students from SNF Development Centre and Dubai Autism Centre as well as blue collar workers.

The finals of the tournament will take place on June 12.
