Los Angeles: It seems increasingly unlikely that Ronda Rousey will ever again wear a UFC title belt, but she now has another prized accessory: an engagement ring.
The former bantamweight champion said recently that she is set to marry her longtime boyfriend, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne.
Browne, 34, told TMZ Sports that he and Rousey, 30, got engaged about a week earlier under a waterfall in New Zealand. “It felt like the right place to do it,” he said.
In a video published by the website on Friday, Rousey showed off a sizeable gemstone and said that the wedding would take place “soon.”
She added, though, that she didn’t know “what goes into planning” of such an event.
“It could be really easy — I don’t really want a lot,” she said.
“I don’t really need decorations or flowers, just somewhere to go, something to eat and some people around.”
Browne had confirmed the relationship in October 2015, saying it began that summer.
At the time, Rousey was the undefeated bantamweight champ and easily the UFC’s biggest star, having crossed over to Hollywood with roles in films such as “The Expendables 3,” “Furious 7 and “Entourage.”
Since then, Rousey’s burgeoning acting career has seemingly stalled, although she landed a role in an upcoming episode of NBC’s “Blindspot.” More significantly, her MMA career may be over entirely.
Rousey has lost both of her past two fights, getting knocked out by Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, the latter in just 48 seconds after Rousey took over a year to return to action following her psyche-shaking loss to Holm.
“If I had to say right here, right now ... I wouldn’t say she fights again,” UFC president Dana White said of Rousey in January. “I think she’s probably done.”
Browne has remained active, but he has lost his past three fights to drop his record to 18-6-1. After his most recent defeat, a second-round knockout at UFC Fight Night 105 in February, the winner, Derrick Lewis, made a lighthearted play for Rousey in his post-fight comments.
Lewis also referred to the fact that Browne’s ex-wife, Jenna Webb, had accused Browne of domestic violence. He has repeatedly denied those accusations and Rousey has supported him, saying in December 2015: “I know that he didn’t do anything.”
Browne is reportedly scheduled to fight Oleksiy Oliynyk at UFC 213 on July 8, so his marriage to Rousey may wait until after that.
