The second Skoda Snooker Championships began with a press conference held in conjunction with the UAE Billiards and Snooker Association.

Over 100 of the UAE's finest snooker enthusiasts will compete for their slice of the Dh30 ,000 windfall that is offered for the event by Skoda Auto.

In addition, if the magical snooker maximum of 147 is scored, Skoda will present a car to the first player to do so.

Sultan Al Joker, UAE Billiards and Snooker Association general secretary, said at the press conference: "We are very pleased to bring the quality Skoda brand on board to snooker for the second year.

"As the tournament grows in stature, we will surely be bringing innovative ideas to the table, and the " Skoda for a 147" concept is just the tonic to kick the event off with a bang."

Hilary Allison, Skoda Auto general manager, said: "We are definitely on the right track in our relationship with snooker and I am sure the next four weeks will be great for the snooker community."

The knock-out format of the championships will carry full ranking points towards the UAE Billiards and Snooker Association annual rankings.

The championships get under way at the Abu Dhabi Police Officers' Club from this Thursday. All matches until the fourth round will be on a best-of-five frames.
