The UAE's budding martial arts fighter Mohammad Nauman won the Open title in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the inaugural Emirates Cup Championship here on Friday.

The 19-year-old, who is currently ranked fifth among juniors in the world, revealed a lot of skill and promise when he prevailed over Tunisia's Hassan Moussa.

"I am very happy with this win. In fact, I decided to miss the weights category just to concentrate on this Open title," said the martial arts expert, who is a product of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club.

Moussa, who had earlier won the 77.9 kg category title, was also given the "best fighter" award.

The UAE won two more titles to dominate the championship. Faisal Al Ketbi defeated Jordan's Muhannad Munir Samra in the 99.9 kg event while Abdullah Al Jabbari added another gold, winning the 100-plus event.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is predominantly a ground-fighting martial art in which the fighter's objective is to avoid punches and kicks while attempting to clinch his opponent.

Once in the clinch, the opponent's strikes are rendered ineffective. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter will then proceed to take the fight to the ground where the opponent, without the ability to use his stand-up skills, is gradually forced into submission.

The championship was organised by the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation under the patronage of Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
