Dubai: Kendo practitioners from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait are gathering in Dubai for the Second Middle East Kendo Competition on March 1.

The competition will be held at the Emirates International School in Umm Suqueim. Children and adults will compete in five separate team matches.

Kendo is a Japanese martial art based on traditional Japanese sword fighting.

Players wear a protective armour and use bamboo swords against their opponents, scoring points when they hit valid strike areas such as the head, wrist and chest.

The event will start with a demonstration at 10am by a Japanese kendo master on the correct form and techniques essential to the practice of kendo. Competitions will follow.
