Dubai: Shaikha Shamssa Bint Hashr Al Maktoum the Dubai International Ladies Volleyball Championships Organising Committee President and UAE Volleyball Association board member, has reached an agreement with Maro Fabrias the chair of the Italian ladies league to organise a Grand Ladies Volleyball Tournament in Dubai.

They agreed to hold the Finals of the Italian League Cup, which is one of the famous ladies volleyball tournaments in Italy. The preliminary rounds of the Italian League Cup will be held in Italy and the top four teams who qualify for the semifinals will play in Dubai to decide the champions.

The best Italian professional ladies volleyball clubs will take part in the tournament including many Italian players and professionals from other European and South American countries.

The agreement also stipulated a friendly match to be played between the club who wins the Italian league cup in Dubai and the UAE ladies national team at the end of the tournament. The Italian ladies league chairman requested the UAE Ladies Volleyball Committee select three dates to organise the championships in Dubai and inform them before February 15.

The Italian side will decide on one of the three dates. After that the Italians will send the UAE committee a complete file concerning everything about the tournament including participating teams, sponsors, and regulations.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan defeated Al Jazira club of Abu Dhabi 3-1 in the Dubai International Ladies Volleyball Championships at the Al Wasl indoor sports hall.

The win took Azerbaijan to the semifinals after clinching second place with seven points in group B, they won 25-23, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-17. Al Wasl B team secured top place in group B with eight points after beating Azad University of Iran 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-17 and 25-20). In the semifinals held late last night, Zubas of Italy top of group A met with Azerbaijan runner-up of group B, while Al Wasl B top of group B met with brothers Al Wasl A in the second semifinals.

The Final of the sixth Dubai International Ladies Volleyball Championships will be held today at 7.30pm at the Al Wasl indoor sports hall.
