Dubai: This year’s Indian High School Sports Festival, which is contested by all the top schools in the UAE, began at the school’s ground with 12 matches in different events.

The volleyball and basketball courts produced some exciting matches, while the football ground saw keen battles for supremacy, with three matches being decided through penalty shootouts.

Abraham Manohar, the school’s headmaster, opened the festival in the presence of Tapan Das, the director of physical education. Speaking to Gulf News, Das said: “This is an event which over the years have produced great contests in all events and we are proud to stage it continuously. We are always delighted with the response and enthusiasm for the event.”

In the volleyball event, Central School, Dubai, beat New Indian Model School (NIMS), Dubai, 2-0 (25-14 and 25-17), while Emirates National School, Sharjah, downed Our Own Indian School, Dubai, 2-0 and NIMS Sharjah recorded a 2-0 win against Delhi Private School, Sharjah.

In basketball, NIMS Dubai lost to Emirates National School, Sharjah, 37-17 and NIMS Abu Dhabi trounced The Winchester School, Dubai, 32-15. NIMS Sharjah won their match again Our Own Indian School, Dubai.

In football, Abu Dhabi Indian School crashed to Our Own English High School (OOEHS), Fujairah, 4-0 with Abdullah Ali scoring all four goals.

Merryland International School, Abu Dhabi, beat the Central School, Dubai, 1-0 thanks to a goal from Swaleh Mkota Kibwana. The match between Sharjah Indian School and Elite English School, Dubai, went to penalties and the Sharjah side won 5-4.

Hosts Indian High School, Dubai, ‘B’ won a shootout against Emirates National School, Sharjah, 4-2. Our Own English High School, Sharjah, also won a shootout 4-1 against The Winchester School, Dubai.
