Dubai: Some of the top bowlers will by vying for a big prize fund at the inaugural Dubai International Bowling Tournament.

The "local competition with an international flavour", to be held from February 11-26 at the Dubai Bowling Centre in Al Mamzar, carries total prizes of nearly Dh300,000.

Competition will be held in two categories: the open class with the champion taking Dh60,000, while the graded competition winner will take home Dh25,000. The total prize money in the Open class will be Dh195,000 and nearly Dh88,000 has been set aside for the top 16 finishers in the Graded competition.

"Besides having the sanction of the World Tenpin Bowling Association and the Asian Bowling Federation, we are going to use this local competition with an international flavour as a preparation for our national squad for bigger events in the future," Mohammad Al Khaja, Vice President of the Emirates Bowling Federation told Gulf News yesterday.

"We have a status in the world of bowling and we plan to use this competition to enable our national team players to get their act together before they embark on bigger competitions later in the season," he added.
