Dubai: A total of 133 athletes from 24 countries including hosts UAE will take part in the sixth Fazza IPC Powerlifting World Cup over the next week.

The competition was announced at a press conference attended by Thani Juma Berregad, Chairman of the Dubai Club for the Disabled (DCD) and Head of the Organizing Committee, Hamad Bel Jafla, Head of the event’s Public Relations Committee, Fatima Arif Bannai, Director of the Media Office at the Hamdan Heritage Centre (HHC), and Nageem Al Meshkan from the technical committee.

The athletes will be classified on Friday, followed by the official inauguration of the tournament and the technical meeting on Saturday. Competition will begin on Sunday and will run to March 18.

The countries represented are: Azerbaijan, Jordan, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Thailand, Egypt, Slovakia, Syria, France, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Netherlands, India, Mongolia, Poland, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Hungary, Ivory Coast and hosts UAE.

Jon Amos, Chairman of IPC Powerlifting, will be hosting a special workshop for the tournament’s referees, where he will discuss the rules and regulations as well as various techniques related to the sport.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, the tournament is organised and supervised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Heritage Centre and Dubai Club for the Disabled.

This is the fourth competition under the umbrella of the Fazza Championships for People with Disability held so far this season. The Fazza National Championships for People with Disability was followed by the Fazza International Para-Archery Competition and Fazza International Athletics IPC Grand Prix Dubai held last month.

The Fazza International Championship for Boccia is due to be held in April, followed by the Fazza International Wheelchair Basketball Championships in May.
