UAE residents joined Team Dimension Data’s pledge to donate bikes to people in Africa.

Michelle Buys Du Plessis, Managing Director of Dimension Data, UAE, told Gulf News: “Dubai has done a magnificent job.”

Mark Cavendish’s team, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, rides to raise funds for the Qhubeka Charity to mobilise people on bicycles, in Africa.

Team Dimension Data, UAE decided that if the visitors of the Dubai Tour, could match up the cycling team’s race kilometers daily, using two stationary bikes, they would donate five bikes to Qhubeka.

Plessis said: “The team started out with great ambitions. The first day we were 10km short and I felt quite devastated. But we made it up next day. By Friday, we had already finished 841 km which was the length of the five stages.”

Does this mean more bikes for Qhubeka? “We finished our goal on Friday but we continued to clock up more miles to try and throw in a few more bikes,” said Plessis.

Those who cycled received a card with their picture on the stationary bike. The card held details of how much the rider had contributed to the program and details about the Qhubeka charity initiative.
