The Emirates Motor Company's annual Abu Dhabi Autocross Challenge has been converted into an extended version over four rounds with a Dh50,000 cash prize for the overall winner.

The first of the four rounds of the EMC Abu Dhabi Auto Cross Challenge will be held on January 14 in the parking area of the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre under the patronage of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior.

"Following the high level of excitement dished out in the past and an encouraging response from the drivers and spectators, we have decided to make this event a four-round affair," said Richard Siemicki, general manager of EMC.

"In each of these events, winning drivers of the various classes will then battle it out in the Mercedes event in which C Class C200 Kompressor stock cars will be used. Each winner on that day will qualify for the final showdown at the end of the fourth round. The winner among these four drivers will be crowned the overall champion," Siemicki said.

Ahmad Al Shehi, managing director of Sports Star, the organiser of the event, said only 50 drivers will be accommodated for each round on a first-come-first-served basis.

After the first round on January 14, the other three rounds will be held in February, March and April.

The event, which is held under FIA rules, is expected to start at 2 pm on January 14 and entrance is free. "Unlike in Formula One racing where the cars go out of sight, here the spectators can see the whole track and all the action on it," said Siemicki.
