St Louis: Forward Todd Ewen, who won a Stanley Cup championship with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, died over the weekend. He was 49.

Ewen was mainly known as an enforcer during the time he spent with four National Hockey League teams, the Canadiens, St Louis Blues, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and San Jose Sharks. The cause of death was not known.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Todd Ewen,” said Blues owner Tom Stillman on Sunday. “He was an outstanding individual who called St Louis home.”

Canada’s Ewen played 124 games for the Blues before being traded in 1989 to Montreal, where he spent four seasons and recorded 13 goals and 32 points in 190 games.

But Ewen made his name as an enforcer, leading the Blues in penalty minutes in 1987-88 with 227. He also had more than 200 minutes in penalties with the Ducks in the 1993-94 (272) and 1995-96 (285) seasons.

He compiled more than 1,900 penalty minutes during his 11-year career.
