What is it?
The Wall at Dubai Trade Centre Apartments is a secret spot of coolness. It’s so cool that I was contemplating playing it down, so as not to encourage too many people to go. Why is it so cool? Well, climbing is an excellent workout – it strengthens, stretches, tones and burns without you even noticing. And, as climbing walls go, this is a pretty good one; it’s outdoors so you are climbing under the starry night sky, it has a speedwall (for the hard-cores) and various grades of routes ranging from four (easily do-able for children) to seven (don’t even bother unless you’re Spider-Man).
Another fab factor is the instructor, Ivan, who is calm, but encouraging, and teaches you the ropes (literally) without making you feel like a newborn. He greets everyone warmly, setting the tone for a friendly atmosphere.

Fitness focus: Climbing
It’s a physical workout, a de-stress session, an adrenaline rush and a social event rolled into one. Give it a go! Just don’t look down...

What happens?
I signed up for an eight-session course with three friends – all of us beginners and two afraid of heights. We were straight on the wall and, by session three, we were manning the ropes (belaying) for each other. It is as much a lesson in trust as it is in climbing – dropping into an abseil is scary when you know it’s a beginner on the other end. But it’s a blast.
Why do it?
We’re progressing well, really enjoying it and getting stronger and more daring each time. One friend said, “Climbing is much more fun than a tedious gym session. It’s a serious adrenaline rush, a fantastic workout and a great social activity to do with friends, partners and kids. Also, there is the sense of achievement and accomplishment, which really adds to the experience.” Suffice to say, we’re hooked.
Where?
Dh650 for a beginner course of eight lessons. Then Dh60 per day, or Dh500 for a ten-session pass. Call 04-3065061.
