Darts is most definitely a sport according to 16-time world champion Phil Taylor — but he wishes it wasn’t.

“If something is not a sport it’s a pastime or hobby and you don’t pay tax on pastimes or hobbies, so I totally agree with anyone who says darts isn’t a sport, because then the taxman can give me my money back,” said the Englishman, on the sidelines of this week’s Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters at Dubai Tennis Stadium from Wednesday to Thursday.

Seriously though, he said: “It depends what you class as a sport really. Have you always got to run around a field sweating and tackling people?

“Sport to me is defined as a reaction to a reaction. If someone hits a golf ball to within two foot of the hole you have to try and hit it to within one foot. That’s how I define sport. If someone hits 140, you have to hit 180 to try and beat your opponent.”
