Sharjah: The promoter for the 2015 Aquabike Grand Prix of Sharjah is expecting handsome returns to the sport as the event marks its debut this weekend.

The first-ever Aquabike Grand Prix will be held at the Khalid Lagoon on Saturday and Sunday as organisers Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) seek ways to extend the attraction to watersport activities in the emirate.

This year, and for the first time, the SCTDA has been joined by the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club (SIMSC) in using the F1 weekend to promote various watersport activities, especially among children.

During the course of Thursday, more than 120 riders — most of them under five-years-old — took to the water on electric jet skis at a specially cordoned off area on the Khalid Lagoon to get a feel of the sport.

“So it is just right that we have the Aquabike Grand Prix here. The initiation for the young ones is the best thing that has happened to the sport as most of the kids out there were Emiratis,” Nicolo di San Germano, Promoter of the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship.

With the F1 Sharjah Grand Prix out of the way on Friday evening, Saturday’s activity for the Aquabike Grand Prix will start with the Ski Ladies GP1 category at 9am, and continue until the final Freestyle category at 4.45pm.

“This is our way of stretching the entertainment for public from two days to four,” San Germano related.
