The UAE began their five-nation GCC Youth Basketball Championship campaign with wins over Qatar and Bahrain, but a narrow 80-78 defeat against Kuwait meant the final round-robin match against unbeaten Saudi Arabia became a gold medal showdown.

However it was an agonising defeat for the host as the strong Saudis ran out 67-59 winners to take the championship title at the Sharjah Club indoor hall.

It left the UAE in second place, but still good enough to qualify for next year's Asian youth finals along with the Saudis.

UAE youngster Rashid Naser was awarded the Best Player of the Tournament accolade.
